前夜、アリソン・フリードマンの家に集まった人たちでポスター作り。
朝10時に議事堂近くの広場に集合、との話だったが、10時過ぎにアリソンの家を出発。地下鉄は超満員。一本やり過ごして、なんとか二本目に乗り込む。土曜日だが、平日のラッシュ時よりも乗降客が多かったという。11時過ぎに議事堂最寄り駅に着く。議事堂に近づくに連れて人が増えていく。昨日の就任式よりもはるかに人が多い。男性も結構いて、安心した。
耳がついたピンクのニットキャップをかぶっている方がたくさんいる。これは「プッシーキャット」を意味するのだという。
時々小雨が降るが、幸いそれほど寒くない。マーチは午後1:15に始まると聞いていたが、なかなか始まらない。多くの人は手書きで思いの「サイン」を書いて掲げている。アリソンの家に集まった人たちは中国語ができる人が多いので、「中国からトランプへ。グレート・ウォール（万里の長城）はうまくいかなかったぞ」というサインを英中二カ国語で作ったら、道行く人にawesome!などと声をかけられた。サインは本当に様々で、中には「パレスチナ解放！」といったものもあれば、ごく稀に「家族計画を増やして中絶を減らせ」というリベラル派らしくないものも見かけたりする。
声の通る人が節をつけて耳なじみのいいキャッチフレーズを叫ぶと、周りの人がついていく。”my body, my choice”, “black lives matter”, “we need a leader, not a frequent tweeter”, “we’ll not go away, welcome to your first day!”等々。以前宮内康乃さんがニューヨークのデモのときに「音楽の生まれる瞬間に立ち会っているよう」と言っていたのを思い出した。
午後2時近くなって、ようやく行進が始まった。
著名人のスピーチやライブなどもあったらしいが、いつどこでやるのかは公表されておらず、結局一度も出会わなかった。だが、それもまたよかった気がする。ふつうの市民が、主張はけっこうばらばらのまま、とにかく自分の思っていることを書いたり叫んだりして歩く、というのが、近代で最も古い民主主義の歴史をもつこの国ならではのことのように思えた。”we gonna show, what the democracy look like!”というリフレインが心に残った。
午後10時の便でシカゴへ。直行便が高騰していて、ふつうは二、三時間のところ、フロリダ経由で10時間近くかかることに。電車では17時間くらいかかって翌日の舞台に間に合わないので、仕方なく。
夜のワシントン発オーランド行きの機内は、ウィーメンズ・マーチTシャツを着た女性同士がハイタッチしているのをトランプTシャツを着た男性が片目で眺めている、という他ではあまり見られなかった状況。フロリダ州は大統領選で票が分かれ、最後まで勝敗が決まらなかった州の一つ。フロリダに戻ったら、この人たちが対話を交わす機会はどれくらいあるのだろうか。
